I got this idea from a viewer in my Woodworking for Mere Mortals Gifts Series for Christmas. I’m using two naturally contrasting colored woods to make the candy cane, but you can also stain on any kind of wood to get the desired effect or paint!
I made up a cutting template that you can download here and follow to cut the alternating pieces!
I’m using my table saw and rip fence to rip some pieces down to the correct widths I’m needing, 1/2″ thick.
On my cutting template, I’m just measuring out each piece to get an exact measurement to cut each color.
Cut all of the pieces to the right length!
Glue the sides and line them up on the cutting template and tape them together with some painter’s tape to be able to easily transfer the cutting template outline.
Now I can take the tape off and cut out the shape!
I attached the template with spray lacquer.
This would be really easy with a bandsaw but you can also use a a jigsaw to make your cuts.
I used my router table round over bit to round the edges but you can also leave them square if you prefer that style!
And I’m sure if you’ve watched my videos you know what the last step is: Spray Lacquer!
All finished! I’m so happy with how these turned out! Perfect for Christmas gifts. If you’re interested in what tools I recommend for getting started making projects like this one for homemade gifts or even a side business, download my tool list here.
