    router bits spin really fast and that rotation will cause deflection under the weight of the cutter head spinning and the force of the bit cutting the wood

    I believe you should use a 1/2″ shank bit when ever you can for safety reasons as well as quality of cut

    this is the same reason the dovetail bits for the leigh dovetail jig are 7mm and not 1/4 shank so they can have the bigger shank to make them the most stable with the least deflection

    1/2 shaft bits do not cost much more then a comparable 1/4 shaft

    just my 2 cents
